We use #610 for the base course because it compacts under farm equipment and truck traffic without washing out. #57 on top for cleaner surface drainage.
Fill Dirt
Rice farming country sits close to sea level. Build a home here without proper elevation and you're asking for problems. Structural fill to bring the pad up. Clean fill for yard grading around the perimeter. Select fill for the compactable sub-base under any slab. This is the most important material decision out in Iowa.
Sand
Concrete sand for foundation pours on new homes east of Lake Charles. Iowa's native sandy soil drains well, which helps with formwork. But you still need proper concrete sand for mix. Fill sand for utility work along Highway 90 when crews are trenching for water lines.
Pea Gravel & Drainage Stone
Rice farming land holds water by design. When you build a home on it, you redirect that water problem into your yard. Pea gravel French drains move it off the property. Drainage stone for roadside ditches on rural parcels where culverts need stone lining. Iowa customers use a lot of pea gravel.
Topsoil & Garden Soil
Iowa families have always gardened. Native sandy soil needs organic amendment to hold nutrients and moisture. Screened topsoil for new lawns when families move onto previously agricultural parcels. Rich garden soil for raised vegetable beds. Compost that breaks up and enriches Iowa's light sandy ground.
