What's the best decorative stone for a water feature in Lake Charles?
I'd go with river rock. For a pond border or dry creek bed, 1 to 3 inch river rock looks the most natural and drains well. Want a high-contrast modern look? Mexican beach pebbles in the 2 to 4 inch range are sharp. Both hold up in our heat and humidity.
How much decorative stone do I need for a planting bed?
At 2 to 3 inches deep, one cubic yard of decorative stone covers about 100 square feet. For a 200-square-foot bed, plan on 2 cubic yards. Larger stone sizes need more depth, which means more material. Use the calculator on this page or call us and we'll help you estimate for your specific bed dimensions.
Do I need landscape fabric under decorative stone?
I always tell people yes. Without fabric, weeds push through and stone sinks into the soil over time. A commercial-grade woven fabric lasts years. It's a cheap add that makes the whole install last much longer. Don't skip it.
Does decorative stone hold up in Louisiana heat?
Stone is unaffected by heat, UV, or humidity. That's one of the main reasons people in Calcasieu Parish switch from organic mulch to decorative stone. Mulch breaks down, fades, and needs replacing every 1 to 2 years. Stone goes in once and looks the same 10 years later.

River Rock
Smooth, rounded, natural stone in earth tones. Sizes range from 1 inch up to 4 inches. The classic choice for dry creek beds, water features, and landscape borders. Drains well and holds its look for years.
Mexican Beach Pebbles
Dark, smooth, polished-looking stones. Black, dark gray, and deep charcoal tones. Very popular around pools and modern garden installations. The contrast against light-colored concrete or white gravel is sharp.
Polished Stone
Tumbled and polished aggregate in mixed colors. Used in upscale planting beds and accent paths. Reflects light well in shaded beds. Good for areas where you want visual texture without a lot of variation in size.
Colored Gravel
White, red, black, and brown gravel for decorative beds. Stays put under landscape fabric and lasts through Louisiana summers without fading. No mulch replacement every spring. Put it down once and forget it.
White Marble Chips
Bright white decorative stone. Formal garden beds, borders along walkways, and foundation plantings. The white reads clean even in direct sun. Very popular in Westlake and the neighborhoods along Lake Street in Lake Charles.
Decomposed Granite
Fine crushed granite with a natural tan-gold color. Xeriscaping paths and low-maintenance garden areas. Compacts slightly underfoot without becoming a hard surface. Drains through fast after rain.
