Common Uses

Common Uses for Fill Dirt

Foundation Backfill

Pack it tight against the foundation after the pour and inspection. It supports the slab and sends water away from the structure. Every new build needs this step. No added cost.

Raising Elevation

Southwest Louisiana floods. A lot of homeowners in Lake Charles and Sulphur added 12 to 24 inches of fill after the 2020 storms. Fill dirt is the cheapest way to gain elevation fast before topsoil and sod go on top.

Yard Grading

Low yards pool water. It lets you rough grade the slope before topsoil goes down. Get your drainage running toward the street or a swale. One or two loads handles most residential yards in Westlake and Moss Bluff.

Stump Hole Filling

Tree companies pull stumps and leave craters. It fills those holes solid. Pack it in layers so it doesn't sink. One load goes a long way if you're filling five or six stump holes across a property.

Commercial Site Prep

Contractors use it to rough grade commercial pads before limestone base goes down. It's cheap enough to move in volume. We've run this material under parking lots, storage facilities, and commercial builds from Carlyss to DeQuincy.

Trench Backfill

Utility contractors close trenches with it after the pipe or conduit is bedded. It's fast, compacts under a plate compactor, and holds grade. Every plumber and electrician running underground lines in Calcasieu Parish uses it.

Common Questions

Questions About Fill Dirt

What is this material used for in Lake Charles?

It goes under foundations, behind retaining walls, and into any hole that needs to be filled solid. In Calcasieu Parish it's heavily used for post-storm elevation work. Homeowners in Lake Charles, Sulphur, and Moss Bluff used it by the truckload after Laura and Delta to raise slabs and regrade flooded yards.

How many tons do I need for my yard?

Use the calculator above. Enter the length, width, and depth you need to fill. Multiply length by width by depth in feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards, then multiply by 1.0 to get tons. A tandem axle load is 12 to 15 tons. Most residential yards in Calcasieu Parish take 2 to 6 loads depending on the amount of elevation needed.

Is it the same as topsoil?

No. It's unscreened subsoil. It has little to no organic matter. Plants won't grow in it well. It's for structure, not growing. Topsoil goes on top of fill dirt as the finish layer where grass and plants root. If you're raising a yard, use it to build elevation first, then finish with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil before you sod.

Can it be used to backfill a foundation?

Yes, and it's the most common use we see. After a foundation pour passes inspection, contractors pack it against the slab to support it and route surface water away from the structure. Compact it in layers. Don't just dump it in all at once or you'll get uneven settling over the first few rain seasons.

Do you deliver next day across Calcasieu Parish?

Most orders placed before noon ship the next day. We run tandem axle dump trucks to Lake Charles, Sulphur, Moss Bluff, Westlake, Prien, Carlyss, Iowa, Vinton, and DeQuincy. Call early and we'll get it there the same afternoon. Late orders go out first thing the next morning.

How much does it cost per load?

Pricing depends on your location and order size. We quote an all-in delivered price with no fuel surcharges or hidden fees. Call (337) 545-3022 or use the quote form and we'll get you a number fast. Volume orders get better pricing per load.
