How many tons do I need for my yard?

Is it the same as topsoil?
No. It's unscreened subsoil. It has little to no organic matter. Plants won't grow in it well. It's for structure, not growing. Topsoil goes on top of fill dirt as the finish layer where grass and plants root. If you're raising a yard, use it to build elevation first, then finish with 4 to 6 inches of topsoil before you sod.
Can it be used to backfill a foundation?
Yes, and it's the most common use we see. After a foundation pour passes inspection, contractors pack it against the slab to support it and route surface water away from the structure. Compact it in layers. Don't just dump it in all at once or you'll get uneven settling over the first few rain seasons.
